Happy New Year from Vanessa Maria
Wishing you a very happy New Year! I do hope 2018 finds you well.
It's been a year since I announced my début EP - one of the craziest and most wonderful years of my life. Starting my BA in Songwriting at The British and Irish Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) in Manchester was so scary and difficult at first as it was five years since my A levels and I was leaving my Yorkshire home for the first time.
But I gained confidence with every passing day. I made dozens of new friends, found local mentors, put together and performed with my fabulous band, and passed all the coursework and written papers needed to start uni Year 2.
I still do acoustic sets in pubs and clubs and some busking. But mostly I'm now working with sample pad and synth to create trippy, weird tunes.
Manchester is an amazing music city!
That was me performing at the O2 Ritz last June. I've also played solo and band gigs at many city centre and Northern Quarter venues including Gullivers, Night and Day Cafe, The Castle Hotel and Gorilla.
Yup - that's me with some of my fellow students on stage at The Killers soundcheck at Manchester Arena in December for a Q&A session.
Living close to Salford's MediaCity has opened up some interesting opportunities for me as a film and television extra.
This was my two-second appearance wheeling a bike past Tamsin Greig and John Gordon Sinclair in the BBC2 docudrama 'Diana And I', screened in September.
I've also appeared briefly in a couple of episodes of Corrie on ITV.....and I'm in the film 'Lies We Tell' which stars Hollywood actors Harvey Keitel, Gabriel Byrne and British actor Jan Uddin and is due to be screened in a few weeks' time.
Being an extra is not exactly the glamour life some might think. It can be a full day spent sitting around in-between multiple takes, only to end up with a one second appearance or edited out completely. Still, it's fun and helps with student expenses.
In July I took a break and went to Paris.
I danced outside the Moulin Rouge, paid my respects to Jim Morrison and Edith Piaf at Père Lachaise cemetery, watched the Bastille Day fireworks at the Eiffel Tower and impersonated Marie Antoinette (but kept my head) at Versailles.
Paris is a beautiful city and I will definitely be going back there soon. I'm planning a trip further afield this autumn and hoping to play my first gig on another continent.
One place I visited while in Paris was the Bataclan music venue, to pay my respects to the 300 people killed and injured in the 2015 terror attack.
It was a poignant reminder of the day back in May when I woke up to news of the bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester Arena.
That evening I visited the vigil along with thousands of fellow Mancunians and I was inspired to write the song 'Bees' as a tribute to the young fans who died and were seriously injured.
I was humbled when BBC World Service contacted me to broadcast a live interview and perform my song, which was included on the charity album 'Manchester With Love', released in support of the victims.
....THE YEAR OF THE BUTTERFLY....
This year I'll be focusing on writing and recording music, while balancing studying and gigging both for pleasure and to pay the bills. You never know, I might even be able to fit in a bit of social life.
I'm getting back into the studio. I've got a lot of new music that I'm going to be sharing with you all throughout this year. Excited new sounds and visuals are on the way.
Thank you all for sticking with me and for your support - the love is real.
